I'm wondering about tightening the first 2 minutes that show the students' engagement in literature...maybe limit this to about 1 minute and include enough so that we can see the depth of thinking exhibited in this discussion.
The teacher's comments work well; her passion and enthusiasm come through nicely and create a strong context for the student discussion.
I'm looking for a way to strengthen the connection between this first section to the student sharing the book toward the end...can she be included in the discussion at the front? I think I remember her adding a comment or two. Or can her piece be mixed in with the discussion?
Also, please omit my voice from this last section: "that's great" and "nice way to tie it all together"...thanks!
I agree with Marla's comments. The dialogue in the opening with the students is excellent, but is too long. If we were to highlight a quote in the beginning from the student who is aware of her biracial relationship and then cut to the teacher discussing how these students are more aware and then some of the discussion about how the hero can actually be evil...
